1971 - [Source = Vice City dialogue]
Tommy Vercetti is around twenty years old. Sonny Forelli sends him on a job to kill one man. When Tommy reaches his target there are ten or eleven guys waiting for him. Tommy knows that he's been set up but manages to kill everyone. He is captured and sent to prison for this crime. He becomes known as 'The Harwood Butcher' and spends the next 15 years in prison.

GTA: Vice City - released 2002
Main Character - Tommy Vercetti.
Time period - 1986.
Locations - Vice City.

Backstory:
Tommy has just got out of jail after a 15 year stretch and wants to get straight back to work for the mob. The Forelli's based in Liberty are wanting to expand their empire and are looking South. They see rival gangs getting rich off the drugs trade and plan to send Tommy down to Vice City with some money so he get in on the action. Once he is set up nicely, Sonny Forelli will move in and take control.
Vercetti heads south with a couple of other guys to meet mob lawyer, Ken Rosenberg, and buy some cocaine. The other guys' names** aren't important as they are killed when the deal is ambushed by a third gang. Tommy and Rosie only just get away.
Tommy Vercetti is in a new city with no money, no drugs, no gang and no idea who just nearly killed him.
Plot:
Sonny wants his money - and he wants it fast. Rosenberg's terrified that the mob will kill him and doesn't dare leave his office. He gives Tommy his invite to a party aboard Colonel Juan Garcia Cortez's yacht. It was the retired colonel who helped Rosenberg set up the failed exchange and it's hoped that the party might allow Tommy to mingle with someone who knows something. Cortez asks his daughter, Mercedes, to show Vercetti around and indeed there are plenty of players aboard.

There's Congressman Alex Shrub, although without his wife Laura. He seems to making do with the company of up and coming porn star - Candy Suxxx. They're talking to Kent Paul, an english guy trying his luck in warmer climates. Another traveling brit is amusing 2 girls on the other side. It's lead singer of scot rock band Love Fist, Jez Torrent. Then there's the Vice City Mamba's star tight-end, BJ Smith, talking property with Avery Carrington while a young man named Donald Love watches silently. The chatty trio in the corner are Cortez's right hand gimp - Gonzalez, film director Steve Scott and Pastor Richards. Making a late entrance is "Mr. Coke" himself, Ricardo Diaz. If anyone knows about the Vice City drug scene; it's him. Mercedes obviously doesn't think much of the little man with the big attitude. She quickly uses Vercetti as an excuse to get away.
Rosenberg thinks that Kent Paul should know some good leads, so Tommy goes to see him at the Malibu Club. Paul informs him that a chef called Leo Teal deals out of a kitchen in Ocean Drive. The chef puts up some resistance and Tommy ends up killing him. Three more chefs arrive bearing cleavers, but some unexpected assistance arrives in the form of Lance Vance. Lance was involved in the drug deal that brought Vercetti to Vice and his brother was killed when the deal went sour. He wants to get even and he wants his drugs back.

Cortez calls and says that he is attempting to find who stole the coke. Tommy does a few jobs for him, one of which includes taking a chainsaw to Gonzalez because it was apparently his loose talk which led to the ambush. Then he has Tommy oversee one of Diaz's drug deals. He bumps into Lance and the two of them look on while the deal goes down. Halfway through a bunch of Cubans turn up shooting and steal the money. Tommy recaptures it and returns it to Diaz. The coke baron likes Vercetti's style and offers him and Lance some work. After a while it becomes clear that Diaz was behind Tommy's failed drug deal and Lance is eager to get revenge. But he goes too far and Diaz becomes aware. The drug lord captures and begins to torture Lance Vance until Tommy rescues him. Then the boys head back to Diaz's mansion and erase Diaz from Vice City once and for all.
All that once belonged to Ricardo Diaz, now belongs to Vercetti. He's now got a mansion, a gang, some businesses and a protection racket. He's a made man. And that's only the beginning. He buys the Malibu Club, robs a bank, prints conterfeit money, produces porn films, becomes involved with a biker gang and the band Love Fist. It isn't long before Sonny hears of his success and sends the boys down. They attack Tommy's businesses and then head for the mansion. Tommy plans to pay them off with the counterfeit money but Lance, growing more and more restless of being in Vercetti's shadow, turns traitor and informs Sonny of the plan. The mob pours in and the fun begins. The goons go down. Lance Vance dances one last dance and then Sonny Forelli is left bleeding all over the hall carpet.
Ther's no stopping him now. Tommy Vercetti really owns Vice City.

1987 - [Source = San Andreas dialogue]
Brian Johnson tragically dies. His brother Carl leaves his home town of Ganton, Los Santos, and heads for a new life on the East Coast.

The Introduction - released 2004
Main Characters - Tenpenny, Pulaski, OG Loc, Ryder, T-Bone, Toreno, Sweet, Smoke, Maccer, Kent Paul, Rosenberg, Salvatore, CJ.
Time period - 1992 (possibly the end of '91).
Locations - San Andreas and Liberty City.

Story:
In Los Santos, in the western state of San Andreas, two cops discuss what they are going to do about a new recruit soon to join them. The larger one named Tenpenny is more concerned about an existing officer who's threatening to squeal about their rather excessive ways of keeping the streets clean.
A similar conversation is happening in San Fierro. Mike Toreno is explaining his methods of getting a job done to someone over the phone. He says "History will understand" as his associate, T-Bone Mendez, beats the living crap out of some guy.

Back in Los Santos again and everyone's talking about the future. Three members of a purple clad gang named Ballas smoke some 'Hydro' and discuss the state of rival gang - The Grove Street Families. The Grove are falling apart and won't get involved in the drugs trade that's helping the Ballas take over the streets. They mention that they are "capping off one of their OG's", but don't see his involvement as a threat.
Two of Grove Street's Original Gangsters are thinking about their destiny. They see that drugs lead to money, influence and power and see no problem in going against their gang's ideals to make that their future. Sweet Johnson disagrees. He believes the gang should stand by their principles and things will just blow over. He's not so relaxed about his brother. Sweet hasn't forgiven CJ since he skipped town after their brother Brian died 5 years earlier.

Over on the east coast CJ is 'working'. He tries the doors to a few parked cars with no luck. Then a car pulls up in traffic next to him. He takes his chance, opens the door and drags the driver out. Within seconds he's heading off through the streets of Liberty in his newly 'jacked car and decides to call Joey to arrange to drop this vehicle at his garage. Joey Leone seems to be having some family problems and CJ compares how Joey's Dad treats him to the way Sweet talks to CJ. Meanwhile the father in question has more than just family business going on. Salvatore Leone has been approached by Jonny Sindacco with an interesting offer. The Sindacco's want to unite the mob organisations of the Leones, Forellis and themselves and each take a third stake in a Las Venturas casino. Salvatore is interested, but wants an independent third-party to run things. He suggests Ken Rosenberg who has just got out of re-hab after a coke addiction. The one time lawyer has been disbarred and Tommy Vercetti no longer takes his calls. He jumps at the job, little realizing that he will be bullied by all the mobsters to get things done their way.

Kent Paul becomes manager to the Gurning Chimps. A band from Salford, England fronted by a guy known simply as Maccer.
Officer Hernandez is initiated into the force when Tennypenny and Pulaski force him to kill another cop. A mysterious green car glides through the street of Los Santos before it swings past the Johnson house with guns blazing. CJ's mom is dead. It's time to go back.

Welcome to San Andreas.

GTA: San Andreas - released 2004
Main Character - Carl 'CJ' Johnson.
Time period -1992.
Locations - The State of San Andreas (includes areas: Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas as well as desert, country, small towns, a mountain and forest.) Also includes a brief visit to St. Marks in Liberty City.

Backstory:
CJ grew up in San Andreas but left 5 years ago after his brother, Brian, tragically died. He has been living in Liberty ever since, but now has to return after the drive-by killing of Beverley Johnson - His Mother.
Plot:
CJ arrives back in Los Santos and is immediately framed for the murder of Police Officer Ralph Pendlebury. Pendlebury was working for C.R.A.S.H. (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) and was killed when he didn't agree with their "by any means necessary" approach. In fact Pendlebury was shot by new recruit Jimmy Henandez. This was under the duress of the main men of C.R.A.S.H. - Frank Tenpenny and his sidekick Eddie Pulaski. Tenpenny uses the threat of CJ going down for the cop's murder in order to force him to do his dirty work.

CJ meets up with brother and sister, Sweet & Kendl, and some of his old gang buddies Big Smoke and Ryder. Big Smoke has since moved out of Grove Street and the 'Families' are are falling apart. Sweet's insistence of keeping out of drugs has lost the gang a lot of money and members. What used to be one of the largest and powerful gangs in Los Santos has now split into a number of smaller groups and even they are fighting among themselves. The only one who truly declares his gangster ideals is childhood friend Jeffrey. But even he is more interested in moving away to become a successful gangster rapper. If only he had some talent like the highly acclaimed Madd Dogg. CJ helps Jeffrey [-- sorry, "OG Loc" --] by stealing Madd Dogg's rhyme book and sending his manager off the end of a pier.
Carl gets involved in various gang battles. These are mostly with the Ballas and Vagos, but also includes a new russian gang.
On a small scale - the Johnson Family themselves seem to be splitting when Kendl falls for rival gang member of the Aztecas, Cesar Vialpando.
With CJ back on the team 'Grove Street Families' seem to be pulling themselves together. They are taking over long lost turf and even arrange for a meeting between all the 'families' in order to forge them back into one strong force.
Unfortunately the party is over when a SWAT team arrive. Ryder and Big Smoke dissapear and CJ is left to rescue Sweet alone until they return with a getaway car. Later CJ gets a shock when he sees Big Smoke & Ryder meeting up with some Ballas and Officer Tenpenny. What's worse is that they are gathered around a 'Green Sabre', the very same vehicle that was used in his mother's killing.
CJ sees that they are about to trap his gang, who are meeting under the freeway, and rushes to warn them. He is too late. After being knocked unconscious, he awakes in a small country town with Tenpenny informing him that his brother is in jail.
CJ is told to stay out of Los Santos. Cesar calls saying Kendl is worried and he's sent some backup to help. CJ should meet them in a bar in the town of Dillimore. It turns out that the "back up" is Cesar's fiery cousin Catalina. As CJ enters the bar she is threatening two large men with a knife. It appears that Catalina has a passion for armed robbery and has already cased some likely targets. The new 'Bonnie & Clyde' rip through the countryside turning over banks and liquor stores, but it soon becomes clear that Catalina has a quick temper and jealous nature. This demanding vixen may be too much woman for CJ to handle.
She eventually hooks up with a non-talkative guy name Claude Speed. At first she probably does this to make CJ jealous, but who knows what goes through her insane mind. She challenges her two men to race each other and of course CJ wins. Furious Catalina accuses him of cheating and says he can't win the car as she & Claude need it to drive to Liberty City. Instead she hands over the deeds to Claude's garage in San Fierro and the pair drive away.
Accompanied by a marijuana growing, aging hippy known as The Truth, CJ makes his way to his new property.
It's a dump.
CJ feels he's been screwed over but Kendl can see its potential. She sees it as a chance to make something of their lives. She wants to build up the business and get into property. Once CJ and Cesar are convinced, the Truth says he knows some guys that could help. Dwaine and Jethro used to work as mechanics in a Vice City boat yard before Vercetti bought their business. They switched coasts and are trying their luck in San Fierro. An electronics whizz called Zero becomes the final member of the team. His major interest is RC vehicles and he sees himself as being "at war" with fellow RC genius and his nemesis - Berkley.
The group begin to turn the old wreck around.
Something is still bothering CJ though. He knows it was drugs that caused the problems back home and now he knows that the suppliers are based right here in San Fierro. He tracks them to a meeting with one of their Los Santos contacts - Ryder - and finds out that the major players are T-Bone Mendez, Mike Toreno and owner of the biggest club in town - Jizzy B.
CJ infiltrates the gang and eliminates them all, including Ryder who grew up in the house next door. He then ensures that the crack trade will cease by blowing up the factory.
CJ is summoned to meet a mysterious figure at a large cabin in the desert. It's Toreno! CJ had killed a decoy instead. It appears that the leader of the Crack syndicate is in fact a government agent. He's impressed with CJ and wants him to do the jobs he can't get caught doing. He also claims to have the power to get Sweet released from prison if CJ will do "just one more job."

At the same time The Truth, ever suspicious about government agencies and alien conspiracies, has CJ break into the unmapped government base, Area 69, and steal a proto-type jetpack which CJ then uses to acquire a flask of 'Green Goo'. The purpose or meaning of this is unknown.

While in San Fierro CJ became well respected by the local triad gang. In particular a blind man named Wu Zi Mu. Woozie is now opening a casino in Las Venturas but is suffering as the mob puts the squeeze on him. He offers CJ a share in The Four Dragons Casino if he will help out. Luckily it seems that CJ has a connection to the mob.
- The Truth knows a British band managed by Kent Paul.
- Kent Paul has long been associated with a certain lawyer from Vice City named Ken Rosenberg.
- Rosenberg was now hating his new job of 'running' Caligula's Casino.
- Caligula's is jointly owned by three different Mafia families and they are actually 'running' him.

So CJ gets in with Salvatore Leone before double crossing him and pulling a heist at his casino. The Four Dragons is a success.

Tenpenny calls a meeting. It's time to end their association and depart - permanently.
He whacks Hernandez over the head with a shovel, then hands it to CJ telling him to dig two graves. One for the cop, and one for himself. Tenpenny then leaves Pulaski to finish the job. But Hernandez isn't dead yet. He puts his last ounce of life into attacking Pulaski which hands CJ a gun and a way to finish the podgy cop once and for all.
Ever since Madd Dogg lost his manager and rhyme book his life had taken a downward spiral. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol and even attempted suicide. CJ saved him and now he is his new manager. Madd Dogg may be clean, but he has a lot of ground to make up. He doesn't even have his home anymore. The drug lord, Big Poppa, has taken over his Los Santos mansion. CJ plans to get it back for him.

It's time to go back home.
Once back and settled in LS, Toreno keeps his promise and CJ's brother is released. But Sweet isn't happy with how CJ is acting. He's worried that while CJ is living it up in some mansion, he's forgotten about the hood - about the Grove.

One trip back to Grove Street confirms his worries. The place is overrun by Ballas, crackheads, dealers and junkies. Time to clean up. They take back their turf, clean up the streets and put the gang back together just in time to see Tenpenny brought to trial.

The TV announces that all charges against Tenpenny have been dropped. The corrupt murdering, racketeering bastard was free. Los Santos erupts into chaos as riots break out all over the city. The Johnson boys know this means trouble and head home to secure Grove Street. After calming things down a little and helping Cesar's gang regain control of their area, CJ has a vendetta of his own to deal with.
Big Smoke has achieved his goal and is now successful and wealthy. He even has his own crack factory right here in Los Santos. It's time for CJ to pay him a visit. He takes a SWAT tank and smashes right through the factory walls. Then works his way up through the factory until he reaches Smoke's top floor apartment. Smoke sits high on base playing a videogame. He has no regrets and really believes he made something of himself. He knows what CJ is here for and pulls out a weapon. The lights go down, and shortly after, so does Big Smoke.
Then Tenpenny arrives and tells CJ to fill up his bag with the money from Smoke's safe. He shoots a generator which completely shuts off the lighting and causes a fire which starts to fill the building. CJ races through the dark burning factory and gets out just in time to see his brother leap onto the back of the fire truck Tennypenny is using to escape. CJ knows Sweet can't hang on forever so grabs a car and follows the huge red vehicle all around Los Santos. Sure enough Sweet drops, but CJ is there to catch him. His brother takes the wheel as Carl starts shooting at Tenpenny's truck and the cop cars that have joined the chase. Finally in the brothers' home town of Ganton, Tenpenny loses control and crashes through the side wall of the bridge over Grove Street. The fire truck smashes into the hard road below and all is quiet.
The unrepentant lawgiver slowly crawls out. As various onlookers arrive he lies in Grove Street - weak, frail, beaten and dead.

GTA: Liberty City Stories - released 2005 (US)
Main Character - Toni Cipriani.
Time period - around 1998.
Locations - Liberty City (divided into 3 islands: Portland, Staunton Island, Shoreside Vale)

Backstory:
Toni killed a mobster as a favour to Salvatore Leone. He has been laying low for a few years but now returns to Liberty and again working for the Leones.
Portland:
It's the late 1990's and a bus rolls into Liberty City. Among the departing passengers is our main protagonist - Toni Cipriani. Toni did a favour for the mob a few years earlier and has been laying low ever since. He steps off the bus and back into his old home town. Cipriani's first port of call is Salvatore Leone's Gentlemen's club in St Marks. Liberty City is a Mafia playground and the Leones are extremely powerful. However the rival Sindacco family are attempting to take more than a fair share at the moment. Toni is greeted by Sal who introduces him to Vincenzo Cilli who sets Toni up with an apartment but also expects him to do all his dirty jobs for him. Toni Cipriani had expected to return to a high position in the Leones and isn't happy having to answer to this newcomer. Toni is no pushover and it's not long before he quits taking Vincenzo's orders and proves his point by taking Cilli's car to the crusher.

If only everyone was as easy to deal with. Ma Cipriani doesn't seem thrilled to see her son again. Despite moaning that he hasn't called and won't move back home she constantly picks on him and talks of her admiration for the "better" examples of "real men" among Liberty's residents. None more so that the now departed mobster that was Toni's father. Toni will never live up to be half the man that he was in her opinion. She eventually decides that the best thing to do is call out a 'hit' on her own son. That way, at least he'll die like a man.

Salvatore Leone has woman trouble. Two women.

One is Jane Hopper: the trade union leader who is organizing the dock workers strikes. Salvatore helped set up these strikes and now Hopper is refusing to let him use the docks for his own purposes while they are left empty. Luckily Toni soon gets her to see things the Mafia way.
The other woman is harder work. Maria La Torre is Salvatore's young wife. Although Maria enjoys the life of a Mob mistress she is discontent with Sal's companionship and tries to fill her day and body with numerous drugs and men. If she's not offering herself to a biker named Wayne, then she's declaring her love for Toni himself. Cipriani's having none of it, but will look out for Maria for Salvatore's sake.

Then, of course, there is the Sindacco problem. Luckily they have a weasel among their ranks. J.D. O'Toole isn't happy with his position among the Sindaccos and is now trying to get in with the Leone's. J.D. acts as an informant for the Leones by tipping Toni off from the back of Paulie's Revue Club whenever the Sindaccos have something big planned. Thanks to the fat man Toni manages to stop Sindaccos dealing on their territory and also bombing the Leone Gambling den.
In retribution Toni Cipriani plants a bomb in the Sindacco owned casino/brothel known as the Doll's House. His little gift certainly brings down the house and wipes out the Sindacco's biggest hold on the City.
The Sindaccos fight back by kidnapping Don Salvatore and almost succeed in killing him before Toni comes to the rescue. But Sal doesn't back down. He storms into Paulie's Revue Bar with guns blasting and puts them out of business once and for all.

So, thanks to J.D. O'Toole, the Sindacco threat has been removed from Portland. J.D. is so proud that he will finally become a "made man" in the Leone Family. He's donned his best suit and is happily escorted by Cipriani and Mickey Hamfists to be officially welcomed by Salvatore. Only - they don't take him to Sal's. They drive him to the junkyard where Mickey swiftly puts a bullet in the back of his head.
He was a rat who turned on his old boss. There's no way someone that disloyal could be allowed to join the Leones.

Speaking of disloyal, it's around this time that Vincenzo decides to make a reappearance. He calls Toni apologizing for the way he acted before and needs some help. Toni only agrees because he's told that Salvatore wants them to try to get along. Of course it turns out to be a trap and Toni is left deep in the bowels of a ship with lots of chain-saw wielding assasins. Once they are dispatched it's fianlly time to say "so long Cilli" forever.

The big boys in Sicily have sent over Massimo Torini to bring the Mob families closer together. However it seems that this guy isn't quite what he makes himself out to be. He is also conspiring with the Diablos and Triads. Toni puts an end to this little inter-gang get-together but not before the Diablos start an all out war with the Mafia for control of the Hepburn Heights district. The Mafia win the first battle but lose enough men for Toni to seriously doubt the Leone's future in this part of town.

Then the Triads make their move. They blow up the Leone factory by Callahan Point. Salvatore can't take it anymore. He's sure that the mayor is going to blame him for all this and decides to leave Portland for a while. The only problem is that not only are the Ferries not running because of the strike, but the ferry port is swarming with police anyway.
There's only one way off this island for Toni and Salvatore. That is to make the jump across the gap in the unfinished Callahan Bridge. So they do.

STAUNTON ISLAND

After Toni has settled in his new plush high rise apartment near Belleville Park he gets a call from Salvatore. Mayor R.C. Hole is causing trouble for him and so he has to go. Toni sees that the mayor takes his last jog in the park by killing him right under his bodyguards' noses.

Toni is then mysteriously picked up by Mickey Hamfists and some other mafia goons and made to drive down town. He is told that he is going to be "made" and, in a scene frighteningly reminiscent of J.D. O'Toole's "making", Toni is led down to a cellar. Toni is relieved when Salvatore appears and truly does make him a "made man" and a big shot in the mafia.
Toni's mother is so happy she decides to call off the hit she had on him. Those annoying hitmen are now a thing of the past.

It seems that the Forelli Mafia had a lot of influence on the old mayor and it's them that made him hassle the Leones. During an attempt to find the truth, we discover that it's actually the Sicilians that are behind it all. The pushed Franco Forelli into it in order to create a war between the Liberty Mafia Families. The Sicilians plan to come and and take over once the dust has settled.
Now that Mayor Hole is out of the picture Salvatore has a new candidate ready to take his place. The only other contender is a guy named Miles O'Donavan, but Sal has great hopes for property developer Donald Love. If Cipriani can make sure Love wins the election, then the Leones can run the city.
So Toni does his best rig the election, disgrace O'Donavan and destroy any proof of a link between Donald Love and organized crime. All of this is achieved, yet it seems the mere rumours of his association with Cipriani have swayed the voters - proof or not.
Donald Love is now bankrupt and blames Toni personally for his failure.

Toni meets Leon McAffrey of the LCPD. He's a dirty cop who likes the town to run to his rules. He's not against breaking a few laws and letting certain parties run wild. As long as he gets his cut.
His partner, Ray Machowski, is not so inclined. He likes to play things by the book. Leon can't see how Ray got to 40 without getting a bullet in his head. McAffrey loves his life of money, fast cars and beautiful women too much to think of being an honest cop.

Both the Sindaccos and Forellis are unaware that it is the Sicilians who have created the war between them. Salvatore ensures it stays that way and prevents any kind of truce in order for the Leones to keep the advantage.
Around this time Toni assists the Yardies to take the Newport district from Forelli control. Salvatore is captured by the Feds and taken to the Shoreside Vale Police Department. He calls Cipriani making out that he is his lawyer named Lionel.
Cipriani heads off to Shoreside to get the Don out of there.

SHORESIDE VALE

Toni arrives on the western Island and moves into his lovely new house in the hills. Disguised as "Lionel the Lawyer" he visits the despairing Salvatore in jail. The new mayor is fixing it so that he won't get bail. Either the Sindaccos or the Forellis have ratted him out to the feds. The Leones are fighting with the Triads and Diablos for what was once mafia territory and now the Yakuza are planning to make a play to take over. Sal is not a happy man. After years of mob control they've finally flushed it down the crapper.
Using the local "Hoods" gang as back-up, Toni teaches the Forellis a lesson. Then he removes the Sindaccos once and for all which apparently ends the mafia war, but leaves them open to attack from other gangs.
The Yakuza are stocking up on weapons which even include a tank. So Toni has to move quickly to prevent them from using this advantage.

Donald Love calls again, but he's not as insulting as he was after his mayoral defeat. Love is now an unshaven mess. He's got no money, no car and is living in a flop house. But he thinks he can get it all back and offers Toni 10% of "something big" to help him.
He knows that his old mentor, Property Developer Avery Carrington, is coming to town. Avery will have plans to aquire land in Liberty. He will know the best sites and will have the right contacts. Despite Avery's columbian bodyguards Toni manages to kill him and grab the plans. Unfortunately he was seen by 'Liberty Tree' newspaper reporter Ned Burner.
Cipriani had unknowingly performed some side jobs for Burner earlier when Ned was disguised as a priest. Now he plans to put Toni on the front page and report on his heinous crimes. Not if he's dead he won't.

Toni collects the bodies of Ned and Avery and delivers them to Donald's plane. It has become more and more obvious, for a while now, that Donald has developed a taste for human flesh. He holds a private dinner party for himself and his two guests. He later comments that they are still on board the plane, though it is unsaid in what form.

Toshiko Kasen is the wife of Kazuki Kasen, the leader of the japanese Yakuza gang and owner of the Big Shot Casino. Toshiko has heard of Cipriani's exploits around the city and is aware that he needs to remove the Yakuza threat to the Leones. She is living without her husband's love and wants Toni to not just kill him, but humiliate and destroy him. She believes that this will be beneficial to both Toni and herself. Only after Toni grants her wishes does she realise what she has done and what she has lost. Toshiko kills herself as Toni can only look on.

Donald makes a deal with the Panlantic construction company and is excited that he is on his way back. He just needs to free up an area so that it can developed. That nice part of town known as Fort Staunton looks like a good prospect so Toni goes off to meet Bomb expert 8-Ball to help him prepare the foundations. Once 8-Ball has received his $20,000 up front they go to work.
Cipriani places explosives in the tunnels that run under Fort Staunton and destroys the whole area. Coincidentally this was Forelli territory and the media are blaming the destruction on their underground arms stores.

It's the day of Salvatore Leone's arraignment and he's sure he can be a free man if he can just make it to court. The Sicilians would prefer it if Sal stayed out of the way and launch an attack on the convoy transporting him. He makes it thanks to Toni and is released on bail. The Sicilians call the don wanting peace between them and the Leones. He knows that their idea of peace is different from his and tells them to "go fuck themselves". This might not have been the best move because they then kidnap Mayor O'Donovan who has yet to drop the charges on Salvatore.
The pair pursue the kidnappers across town and across water. All the while under constant fire from the Sicilian mobsters. They eventually stop at the lighthouse where they find Massimo Torini and the captive O'Donovan. Torini jumps into a helipopter and tries to finish them from the air. Toni shoots him out of the sky and returns with Salvatore and the mayor to the Gentlemen's Club. They point out to O'Donovan that they saved him and now own him. The charges against Sal are dropped and the Leones run Liberty City.

Tony and Salvatore go and meet an old Sicilian who Sal calls "Uncle". They agree that they are at peace now but the don doesn't trust the old guy at all. Salvatore is pleased with Toni and gives him half a million dollars as a thank you. Cipriani argues that he'd been promised 2 million, and Salvatore confesses that he'd actually promised 1 million dollars, but he should be grateful. GTA Advance - released 2004
Main Character - Mike.
Time period - around 1999/2000.
Locations - Liberty City (divided into 3 islands: Portland, Staunton Island, Shoreside Vale)

Plot:
Mike and Vinnie were pulling one last job for the mob when a car bomb destroys Vinnie's getaway car. Mike intends to escape Liberty, but not until he's taught Vinnie's murderers a lesson.
He goes to see 8-Ball. 8-Ball runs a bomb shop and was a friend of Vinnie. He is also eager to find Vinnie's killers as he wants to know who's making bombs on his turf. He suggests using a group of hookers to gain information from some high-rolling clients. They come back with a name - Jonnie. Jonnie is a bartender involved in all kinds of dodgy businesses and it turns out that Vinnie owed him money. Jonnie believes Mike is now responsible for Vinnie's debt and in order to learn more about his friend's death, Mike agrees to run some errands for the bartender. These range from keeping Jonnie's girlfriend's boyfriend and politician father from finding out about their relationship - to destroying a rival business, the three level disco 'Diamond Sky'. He does this with the help of Slick. 8-Ball has some problems and is keeping a low profile. Slick is taking care of the bomb shop while he's away.
Jonnie is worried. He believes he keeps seeing suspicious characters driving by the bar. He's also concerned because he's getting pressured by people he owes money to. He's right to be. When Mike returns from drumming up some money he finds Jonnie lying dead in a pool of his own blood.

Mike tracks a car leaving the scene to the docks in Staunton. He accuses King Courtney of being behind Jonnie's death, but the Yardie leader explains that even though his men were there to collect their owed money, they didn't kill him. King Courtney says that Cisco, the leader of the Columbian Cartel, arranged for the deaths of both Vinnie and Jonnie. However Cisco pleads innocence saying that Courtney speaks only lies. He says that only the Yardies or Yakuza would have been involved in that kind of thing.
Mike doesn't know who to trust but takes various jobs from Cisco including kidnapping a young school girl called Yuka. She is the niece of Asuka - the leader of the japanese Yakuza gang. Shortly afterwards Asuka contacts Mike. She is unaware of his involvement, but having heard of his reputation, believes that he is the man to rescue her niece.

Mike quickly falls into Asuka's favour by returning Yuka and completing various tasks involving casinos, sports events, film stars, bad fish, Mafia trouble and prostitution. Asuka won't take no for an answer and eventually gets very close to Mike before revealing where he can find the bomber behind Vinnie's death.
Unfortunately the bomber is dead when Mike arrives. But there is a message on the bomber's pager. It's from the person who ordered Vinnie's killing and it asks the bomber to meet up in Wichita Gardens to organize a similar job.

Cisco now has a new place near the airport in Shoreside Vale. Mike is in the area to follow the murder trail and to avoid the Mafia who now want him dead. Mike goes to Wichita Gardens and is greeted by a man in a hat. He is working for the assassin that killed the bomber and it turns out to be an ambush. After killing his attackers Mike goes to visit Cisco who is also looking for the assassin.
The news reports that Liberty City is infected by a bubonic plague. Cisco wants Mike to act as a decoy for him while he attends a conference on the matter. He predicts that there will be a lot of effort to prevent him from attending. After being attacked by the Yardies and the Mafia Mike receives a message that he can find the assassin in Pike Creek.
He's too late, it's just another goon. The boss is "taking care of a little business with a Columbian who's been giving him headaches." Mike dispatches more goons and then heads back to Cisco's where he finds the carnage. He chases a fleeing car and rams it off the road. The driver comes as a shock - it's Vinnie!

It seems that the only guy that Mike trusted has double-crossed him. Mike saw Vinnie as his mentor. He taught him how to survive on the mean streets but eventually he'd played him and wanted all the money for himself. Vinnie doesn't believe that Mike can take him out, but Mike has changed since Vinnie's supposed death and it doesn't prove to be a problem anymore.

8-Ball calls. He's been on the run since he found out the truth about Vinnie. He says that people will be gunning for Mike now that word's got out that he's taken down Vinnie and got his money. It doesn't matter that Vinnie squandered most of it. Then the new head columbian named Paul arrives. He believes that Mike betrayed and killed Cisco and wave after wave of columbians attack. They are defeated but have badly beaten and burned 8-Ball. The police arrive and arrest 8-Ball while Mike makes his escape. Mike decides to go on the offensive. He goes after Paul who warns him that the Yardies are also after him. He says if Mike spares his life then the columbians will back off. True enough, the Yardies are after him, as Mike prepares to attack King Courtney he receives a message from Asuka who thinks she can help.
Mike then gets ambushed by the Mafia but feels that Asuka might have something to do with it. The Yakusa don't stay around during an attack on the Yardies but Mike keeps fighting until a hurt King Courtney admits defeat.

Having defeated his enemies, but with the police closing in, Mike makes his escape. There is nothing left for him in Liberty. He takes Cisco's plane and flies away. Maybe he'll set up in Columbia, maybe some place else. It doesn't matter now. Mike is free.

GTA3 - released 2001
Main Character - Claude Speed (name not revealed in game).
Time period - around 2000/2001.
Locations - Liberty City (divided into 3 islands: Portland, Staunton Island, Shoreside Vale)

Backstory:
After robbing the Liberty City Bank, Claude is betrayed by his girlfriend and accomplice Catalina. She shoots him and takes off with fellow bank robber Miguel and the money.
Sometime later a group of felons are being transported across the Callahan Bridge en route to Liberty Penitentiary. Among them are Claude, 8-Ball and an old oriental gentleman. The Columbian Cartel attack the police convoy and detonate bombs on the bridge, cutting off the road out of Portland. They are there for the oriental guy, but taking advantage of the situation, 8-Ball and Claude hop into a car and escape.
Plot
8-Ball introduces Claude to Luigi Goterelli, who runs the Sex Club 7 and he gives him his first few jobs.
While working for Luigi, Claude meets a prostitute named Misty and a mechanic with mafia connections - Joey Leone. Through Joey you kill Mike 'Lips' Forelli and meet Toni Cipriani.
Toni now runs Cipriani's Restaurante and a local protection racket. The Triads are trying to move in on his turf and he wants Claude to help keep them out. Finally Joey introduces Claude to his father and head of the Leone family - Salvatore Leone. He also meets Salvatore's young girlfriend, Maria, who seems slightly unsatisfied with her life as Salvatores woman. Maria later tells Salvatore that she and Claude are together which results in a bomb being planted in Claude's car. Maria tips him off and they head off to Staunton Island to meet Maria's 'friend', Asuka Kasen. It seems that Maria has a thing for the heads of criminal organisations, as Asuka leads a Japanese gang known as Yakuza.

Claude's first job in Staunton is to prove where his allegiances lie. He must head back to Portland and break his mafia connection by killing Salvatore Leone. Once Asuka has faith in Claude he meets her brother Kenji and Ray Machowski. Ray is a corrupt cop and always meets Claude in the men's toilets in Belleville Park. Kenji runs a local casino. You also see the return of two Vice City inhabitants - Donald Love and Phil Cassidy.
Their return is not so fortunate for Kenji Kasen as the now powerful media mogul Donald has you kill him. This is in order to provoke a gang-war between Yakusa and the Columbian Cartel. But this is not before he has Claude attack the Cartel himself in order to rescue a certain oriental gentlemen that they have been holding since he was taken from the Police convoy. Donald's other missions mainly involve collecting packages. Most of these turn out to be red-herrings but it is during these missions that the third island becomes accessible.
One of Donald's mysterious packages has been stolen and Claude traces it to the Pan-Lantic Construction company. This is a front for the Columbian Cartel, who are heavily involved in the new drug sweeping the area - SPANK.
We soon learn that our old friends Catalina and Miguel seem to be running the show when Claude catches them with the package. True to form Claude's ex turns and shoots her latest man, Miguel, before making her escape. Then the Yakusa arrive with Asuka under the impression that it was Miguel that killed her brother. She takes out a handy whip and attemps to get some answers out of him.

After a couple more missions for Donald Love, Claude discovers that both Love and his oriental friend have left the city leaving behind an empty box. Whatever was in his mysterious package remains a mystery.

Meanwhile Asuka is extracting pieces of information from the dying Miguel about the Cartel's drug business. However when Claude returns from helping Ray flee the city, he finds Asuka dead and a note from Catalina. She is demanding $500,000 for the now kidnapped Maria.
Once he has the money, Claude take's it to the Cartel mansion in Shoreside Vale. Yet again the columbian double-crosses him. She takes the money, strips Claude of his weapons and orders her guards to kill him before taking off in a helicopter. She still has Maria. Claude then battles a number of columbian gang members on his way to a final battle over the Cochrane Dam. After defeating everyone and blasting Catalina out of the sky with a rocket launcher, Claude steps off into the sunset with Maria. Unfortunately Maria seems more concerned by the state of her nails than stopping to thank her rescuer. As the game ends, a gunshot is heard and Maria babbles no more.
Missions supplied by:
Luigi Goterelli, Joey Leone, Toni Cipriani, Salvatore Leone, Asuka Kasen, Kenji Kasen, Ray Machowski, Donald Love, Catalina, El Burro*, Marty Chonks*, King Courtney*, D-Ice*
